The house under Asterousia

The house under Asterousia is located in the village of Pompia, built at the root of Mount Vigla of the Asterousia mountain range. The village took its name from the Roman city of Pompeii, which was destroyed by an eruption of the Vesuvius volcano. The village has 955 inhabitants. Michael Korakas was born in the village, who was the chieftain of the revolution against the Turks. During the Ottoman domination, the Popeia Gymnasium was built, which was one of the two in the prefecture of Heraklion, which still works today.  Geographically located in southern Heraklion, Pompia has the advantage of being close to Matala beach (15km) with the famous artificial caves, carved in the rocks. Also near the village are Kommos beach (12km) and Kali Limenes beach (18km). A few kilometers and half an hour's walk you will be on the enchanting beach of Agiofarago.
