The Old Mill is simply stunning and sits majestically beside the River Ouse. Built nearly 200 years ago, it was originally used as a granary store for the river barges. However, over the years it has been a post office, village pub, antique shop, family home and now a stunning holiday home ideal for a large family or group of friends wishing to enjoy a short break in luxurious surroundings. The Old Mill is sited at the start of Wolsey Walk, named after Cardinal Wolsey, and it is reported that the famous ‘Humpty Dumpty’ nursery rhyme was created when the Cardinal attempted to board the royal barge at the foot of The Old Mill’s front garden on the river deck. Unfortunately he bumped his head as he joined the barge and sadly died en route to London. On entering this property you can’t help but feel the history that envelops each room. The charming kitchen, with original beams and breakfast seating, has a large Aga and a host of Aga cookbooks to help with preparing delicious home cooked meals. For the less adventurous, there is a traditional electric cooker. The large living room has more than enough seating for the whole family and with a roaring fire in the traditional inglenook, and a talented member of the group playing on the baby grand piano, this room is ideal for relaxing in after a long day exploring the local area. Across the hall is the formal dining room furnished with pieces dating to the 18th century. Venturing upstairs on the first floor is the master four poster en-suite bedroom and a second double sharing a Jack and Jill style en-suite featuring a stunning copper bath. You will need to be quick to book your time in this bathroom as a soak in this bath will be second to none. Not to be outdone, the theatrical house bathroom has a freestanding bath surrounded by luxurious drapes and a separate shower. Moving up to the second floor, you will find a further double and a twin room. Each room has its own unique character and charm, and with high quality soft furnishings and deep mattresses, you will be afforded a great night’s sleep. Outside, the front garden boasts a massive river deck with incredible views of the medieval church and Victorian iron bridge. There is also a ‘secret garden’ with a stone circle used for healing by practitioners over 100 years ago. For the keen gardener the fruit trees were handpicked from Australia as well as European climes. The Old Mill is ideally situated for those wishing to enjoy exploring the historic city of York, which has plenty to offer everyone from medieval castles, Roman ruins, world renowned visitor attractions and for shops galore. York is well known for its many cafés, bars and restaurants, but for those wishing not to travel too far away from the holiday home there are a number of exceedingly good eateries within walking distance of The Old Mill. With its dog-friendly garden, off-street parking and storage for bikes, this boutique style property is an absolutely ’must visit’ holiday home. Shop, pub and restaurant 100 yards.
