The Alderman | Private Seaside Townhouse W/ Garden

Brooklyn
Welcome to The Alderman. This 19th century two-family townhome is nestled on a historic block, located in the seaside enclave of Red Hook. This home boasts 3 full floors, with the ability to house up to 8 guests. Enjoy access to a private garden located on the property. Stay cozy in the winter with a wood burning stove. Working from home? The Alderman has two home offices. Located a block from public transit, The Alderman is a nod to historic Brooklyn realized with a modern touch. Built in 1899, The Alderman is comprised of three distinct floors. Enter off the street through the 121-year-old door into the Parlor Level, where you'll make your way down the hallway past two bedrooms both adorned in generous amounts of natural light. Head down the stairs into the open concept Garden Level where you will discover a space to lounge, entertain, cook, and relax in the private garden. Back up the stairs to the second floor of the house is a separate unit, which we refer to as The Loft. The Loft is a completely standalone living space, and is made up of a separate kitchen, bathroom, living quarters, as well as a home office. Staying true to the historic design elements of this 19th-century house, the host partnered with design-duo Portmanteau New York to create a bright and inviting home away from home. Vintage furniture pieces were sourced locally and from abroad with original artworks mingled among the mid-century decor. You’ll notice earthy hand-poured Portmanteau candles + diffusers along with sprawling live plants, offering an escape into nature within the bustling city. The Alderman sleeps up to 8 guests, with 4 beds spread across 3 floors. See below for a brief description of the rooms and spaces in the home: GOSSAMER ROOM This oversized bedroom with Southwestern exposure was designed with the intent of creating a studio vibe, allowing for spacious sleep + work accommodations, all in the same room. The Gossamer Room is centered around original home design elements such as the pressed tin ceiling, wide-plank pine floors, and the masonry brick fireplace. Rest easy on a Casper mattress nestled on a West Elm bed frame. Work from home with ease at the 1960s industrial desk nestled between two large windows offering a view of the historic block. SAGE ROOM Drawing inspiration from the calming, centering effects of sage, the northeast facing bedroom will allow residents to unwind and reflect with an overhead view of the private garden located just out of the window. The original wide plank pine floors and brickwork pair perfectly with a full-size West Elm spindled bed housing a Casper mattress, and with walls that are adorned with vintage artwork. WATER CLOSET The bathroom offers a serene moment overlooking the garden. Have a soak in the original porcelain + cast iron tub, or escape under the chrome rainfall shower. Lighting in this room is motion-activated and automatically dims depending on the time of day. The Water Closet is also outfitted with a Washer/Dryer unit for guest usage. GARDEN LEVEL Head down the staircase into the Garden Level where you’ll find spacious gathering accommodations to commune, create your favorite dish, and relax into the backyard oasis. The dining space is centered around a farm table paired with 1960’s Arkana tulip chairs, set against a metal bar cart decked out with vintage barware ready for your favorite cocktail. The kitchen is set up to indulge those ambitious recipes you’ve been waiting to try. Fully equipped with ample counter space, a gas-range stove and a full-size fridge, this domain is yours to master. Picture yourself easing into the day with breakfast out in the garden. Enjoy the use of a wood burning stove to stay cozy during the colder winter months. More than four guests for dinner? No problem. You’ll find two vintage wooden folding chairs nestled under the stairs. After dinner, unwind on the pullout sectional with linens tucked away in the industrial mill basket. THE LOFT This separate unit located on the second floor of the house is designed with a modernized industrial vibe. The living space, which runs the entirety of the floor, offers queen size accommodations (Tuft and Needle mattress), a separate kitchen equipped with a gas-range stove, counter seating, and a private full bathroom. Work from the office soaked in natural light at a live edge wood desk and a Salvatore Leone bentwood chair. The owner’s love for music is infused in the design of the main room and junior office, with guitars hanging on the walls. The Loft sleeps up to two guests. A MODERN TOUCH. While this home is 121 years old, the owner has worked carefully to infuse the house with elements of modernity. This all starts with keyless entry to the home via the Latch App + Lock System. Guests will find Dyson Purifying Air Blade fans placed in both the Sage Room and the Gossamer Room to both filter and cool the air. The Garden Level has been outfitted with a Marshall Amplification Speaker, which can controlled via Bluetooth, WiFi, or Alexa for easy music/podcast streaming. Winters in NYC can get a bit chilly - luckily this home is equipped with a Nest Thermostat to automatically keep the house heated to a comfortable temperature. This can be voice-activated and fine-tuned via Alexa from the comfort of your bed. The Alderman has a 200mbps Verizon Fios connection - perfect for working from home.
