Asahi Camera is Japan’s longest running monthly photo magazine. Published April 1926 - July 2020, it primarily featured contemporary Japanese photography.
Today, Asahi Camera is recognised as a cultural institution and one of the instrumental monthly circulations to influence domicile photo history.
1968. Asahi Camera showcase the visual portfolios of photographers Takuma Nakahira and Daido Moriyama of the pioneering photo collective Provoke Group. The collaboration marked the advent of a particularly groundbreaking period in Asahi Camera.
During the late ’60’s and early ‘70s the Japanese society and in extension its cultural sector were evolving at an immense pace. The photographic work in Asahi Camera is an amalgamation of this era and mechanism energies.
Year 1971 presents in selection photographers: Daido Moriyama, Masatoshi Naito, Ihei Kimura, Shin Yanigisawa, Shomei Tomatsu, W. Eugene Smith, Kazuo Kitai, Kiyoshi Suzuki, Masaya Nakamura, Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Particular noteworthy are the serialized photo essays «Searching journeys» by Daido Moriyama and Masatoshi Naito’s «Shades of Tokyo». Both projects feature works now understood iconic and include pieces later published in classic reference photo books.
In Moriyama’s case, having visually articulated his distinct ‘are-bure-boke’ shooting style throughout Asahi Camera 1969, the current year find him pioneering investigations into the medium’s essence while formulating new perspectives that progress towards the increasingly deconstructive and deformative.
Moriyama’s magazine works throughout Asahi Camera 1971 were later composed in photo books «Northern» as well as cannons «A hunter», «Bye Bye Photography».
