About the position

NHH in Bergen, Norway, invites applicants for a three-year postdoctoral position in labour economics at the Department of Economics. We are looking for an excellent economist with expected completion of PhD no later than date of commencement. 

The position is part of the Centre of Excellence, FAIR, and is funded by the Norwegian Research Council through Grant Number 275274 (Childhood gap). The project focuses on intergenerational mobility with a special focus on childhood differences. In addition to this, the group has large research projects related to human capital development and education economics. The new hire will work on these topics together with the team, but will also be encouraged to develop an individual research agenda in collaboration with the members of the research group. The position will involve moderate administrative duties. The position is based in Bergen, but research travel will be encouraged and there are also opportunities for research stays at collaborating institutions.

The Department of Economics has more than 50 faculty members and is built around a number of internationally renowned research groups in a wide range of fields, providing high quality research and teaching in economics. Besides labour economics, the key research areas at the department are applied microeconomics, behavioural economics, development economics, industrial organisation, macroeconomics, environmental and resource economics, and international trade. The department has an international faculty and is committed to offer an inclusive and supportive work environment with a key focus on carrier opportunities for young faculty.

General information

The appointee must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time.

Faculty appointments and promotions approved after 1 August 2025 will have Norwegian language requirements, as stated in the national regulations. Postdoctoral fellows must document language proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at minimum A2 level or complete the equivalent of 15 ECTS in Norwegian during the employment period. NHH can also offer courses in Norwegian to postdoctoral fellows appointed before 1 August 2025, who may not initially have Norwegian or another Scandinavian language proficiency.
