Supply chain management is crucial for businesses to remain competitive, deliver high-quality products, and meet customer expectations. Supply chains have gained unprecedented attention from both industry and academia, spanning their strategic development to tactical and operational planning. Recent disruptions have highlighted the need for resilient and sustainable supply chains. Digital technologies are enabling innovative solutions to drive this transformation. In this context, Norwegian companies are undergoing a substantial transformation, propelled by the Green Shift and Digitalization, in particular the ones in the maritime and energy sectors. Their advance is crucial for ensuring the viability, scalability and success of their supply chains, while maintaining the competitiveness and strategic importance of Norway's industrial sector.
This position aims to develop knowledge and competences for the current and future engineers and managers for the design, improvement and installation and re-use of integrated supply chains, with a system perspective of people, materials and products, information, equipment and infrastructure, and energy and environmental resources.
You are expected to develop your research in line within the Production Management Research Group at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at NTNU. The research group, with its Logistics 4.0 Lab, focuses on the design and planning of production and logistics systems, developing specialized knowledge, applying mixed methodology, multidisciplinary approach, joining skills, principles and methods of engineering, management, and computer science. Research is done in close cooperation with industrial and international networks, funded by funding bodies, as EU commission and Research Council of Norway, and results are published in high-quality journals. Members of the research group are actively involved in editorial boards of relevant journals (IJPR, IJPE, JIM, and others) as well as active and managing roles in international societies (IFIP, IFAC, IISE and others).
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MTP) is a leading research and education institution with expertise in logistics, machine design, product development, robotics, materials science, production management, and risk and reliability. Our research addresses critical societal and industrial challenges. MTP boasts advanced laboratories, including the Logistics 4.0 Lab. We offer a range of programs, from Bachelor's to PhD degrees, in mechanical engineering, management engineering & industrial engineering, engineering and ICT. The Department and the research group are seeking for candidates that will adopt a holistic perspective when advancing the research field, combining industrial engineering and management approaches with other ones, such as of decision science, computer science, social science, natural science. Particular attention will be paid on the impact and implementation of emerging technologies (such as AI and other digital technologies) and advanced supply chain management theory on the configuration, scalability, and operations of traditional and emerging supply chains.
Your immediate leader is Head of Department.
Duties of the position
- International level research in the scientific area of the candidate's field, resulting in publications in internationally top ranked journals in your field
- initiate new research projects through active interaction with industry and the funding bodies (e.g. EU and The Norwegian Research Council)
- Initiate, participate in, and manage externally and internally funded research project
- Contributing to, fronting and leading the development of the research area within your field of research
- Teaching at bachelor, master and PhD levels in all the study programs taught in the department
- Supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students and provide mentorship to Postdocs and researchers
- Contribute to the development and the activities of the Logistics4.0 Lab
- Exam preparation and evaluation
- Administrative tasks as required
Required qualifications
You must have the qualifications required for the position of Professor or Associate Professor in the field of advanced supply chain management, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts
To qualify for this Professor or Associate Professor position, we require the following:
- Your academic research production must be within the field of advanced supply chain management
- You must document the capability to carry out interdisciplinary research, in traditional and emerging sectors, with mix-methods (qualitative and quantitative) approaches
- You must have experience of applying qualitative methodologies, in particular case research, action research, conceptual modelling in supply chain management
- You must have experience of applying quantitative methodologies, in particular analytical modelling and data-driven (AI-based) modelling, and knowledge in programming and simulation tools for supply chain management
- You must have publications in highly ranked journals in your field. Scientific articles published in the last five years (excluding career breaks) with relevance for the research areas mentioned above and where interdisciplinary approaches are used will weigh strongest in the evaluation and ranking. The scientific publication record will be evaluated in light of the length of the applicant's academic career taking into account the research field
- You must have documented experience as researcher/post-doc or equivalent
- You must have documented experience at least in preparing research funding applications (national or international) and you must show ability to define proper attractive research. For professorship position, you must have documented experience in successful funding applications and managing roles in research projects
- You must have documented experience in teaching, supervising master students, and assisting the supervision of PhD students and you must show ability to define innovative teaching activities. For professorship position, you must have documented experience in supervising PhD students
- You need excellent oral and written English language skills

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

In a position as Professor (code 1013) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 800 000 to NOK 1 000 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority.
In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 600 000 to NOK 800 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.
