PhD Research Fellow in Sedimentology and Geochemistry

About the position

Position as PhD Research Fellow in sedimentology and geochemistry available at the VICCO Centre, Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo.

The fellowship period is 3 years and devoted to carrying out a project entitled – ‘Characterization of detrital volcaniclastic reservoirs and implications of CO2 storage’

Starting date no later than October 1st 2025.

A fourth year may be considered with a workload of 25 % that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Job description

The VICCO Centre at the Department of Geosciences at UiO seeks a highly motivated geologist that can strengthen the Department and undertake high quality research on understanding the proximal to distal compositional and textural variability of volcaniclastic rocks and the changes through transport, weathering, deposition and burial, and through interaction with other source material, and how this influences potential for rapid mineral carbonation in CO2 storage scenarios. The aim of the project is to increase understanding of how porosity/permeability, secondary minerals, reactive surface areas and rock chemistry develop in volcaniclastic and mixed volcanic-siliciclastic reservoirs under different physio-chemical and temporo-spatial conditions. The candidate will work with both field (logging, sampling, drone photography, cores), and lab (microscopic, QXRD/XRF, poro-perm, MICP) analysis.

The VISTA Centre for CO2 Storage in Volcanic-Sedimentary Systems (VICCO) is funded by VISTA and the MN Faculty at the University of Oslo, from 2025 to 2030. The Centre will target research that will further understand Carbon capture and storage in a context of climate change, and the overarching goal of VICCO is to explore the potential for large-scale permanent CO2 storage in volcanic-sedimentary systems on the Norwegian continental shelf. The Centre will specifically investigate carbonate-forming reactions – the process by which CO2 is trapped in solid minerals– in igneous rocks. Such carbonation may enhance seal integrity in the storage medium and reduce reservoir leakage risks in mixed volcanic-sedimentary systems. Carbonation processes can ensure permanent storage of CO2 by reducing the risk of reservoir leakage in the volcanic-sedimentary systems beneath the seabed. 

The VICCO Centre is a cross-disciplinary research centre spanning geosciences and physics, hosted at the department of geosciences. The proposed project will run in parallel with several other PhD studies/research on related topics, and be part of a dynamic and inspiring team of students and researchers. In addition UiO hosts a number of large-scale research studies related to CCS, thus the candidate will form part of a large network of complementary research.

Required qualifications

• A background in sedimentology. Applicant’s MSc theses will be considered in evaluation of the candidates.
• Good skills in written and spoken English
• An internationally valid driver’s license

Desired qualifications

• Experience with one or more of the following would be advantageous:
• Conducting fieldwork, involved in planning fieldwork campaigns
• Integrated basin studies based on seismic and borehole data
• Lab experience, preferably working with XRD/XRF analysis
• A background in transport and weathering of sediment
• Understanding of geochemistry

Language requirement

• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

Grade requirements

The norm is as follows:

• the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
• the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
• the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system

Candidates without a master’s degree have until 30 June 2025 to complete the final exam.
