About the job

The Department of Energy and Process Engineering seeks a PhD-educated engineer to facilitate the day-to-day activities of the state-of-the-art Fluid Mechanics Laboratory. This laboratory includes NTNU’s large wind tunnel, and the air-water channel, as well as an impressive suite of laser diagnostics equipment.

The successful candidate will collaborate with the professors who use the laboratory on facility and equipment scheduling, helping phd students set-up experiments, training phd students in experimental methods, maintain the masters-level laboratory activities, liaising with external partners, liaising with internal partners and technicians, and performing research. The position is partly externally funded, and the candidate will be involved in seeking external funding for research activity. Some training and upgrading tasks may take place at other groups within the department, e.g., indoor environment, hydropower, and combustion laboratory.


Duties of the position
  • Maintain laboratory and equipment schedule.
  • Maintain the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory facilities.
  • Maintain measurement equipment including cameras and lasers.
  • Train PhD students on various experimental methods.
  • Lead health and safety activities in the laboratory.
  • Liaise with external partners to produce revenue.
  • Maintain the laboratory’s internet presence.
  • Write journal papers.
  • Represent the lab in scientific and non-scientific forums.

Required selection criteria
  • PhD in mechanical, civil or aerospace engineering, or physics, with a focus on experimental fluid mechanics.
  • Strong written and oral English language skills
  • Experience with the following state-of-the-art fluid mechanics techniques, e.g., particle image velocimetry (2D, Stereo, and 3D such as Tomo-PIV and STB), laser-Doppler velocimetry, hot-wire anemometry, high-speed imaging.
  • Experience managing a fluid laboratory with wind tunnels and water channels.
  • Proficient in MATLAB and/or Python.

Preferred selection criteria
  • Experience supervising students
  • Experience with the equipment tendering processes in Norway.
  • Experience writing journal papers in leading fluids journals, e.g., the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physical Review Fluids, Experiments in Fluids.
  • Experience working with social media, particularly in a science context.
  • Experience with computer aided design (CAD).

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Head Engineer code 1087 is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 600 000 – 750 000 before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria's in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
