 The position

The Department of Physics and Technology announces a vacant position of a Researcher affiliated with externally funded projects in space physics. The appointment is for a period of 22 months. 

The Researcher will work on the dynamics, charging and properties of dust particles in the upper Earth atmosphere and in space. An additional task lies in supporting mobility and exchange of space researchers in the Nordic region, and developing outreach strategies for space research to the general public and to high school students. The researcher will among others participate in a rocket campaign to study dust in the mesosphere that is scheduled for launch in summer 2025. 

The researcher will work on the project CODIA which is funded by the Research Council of Norway and by Interreg Aurora project “Boosting Space Economy” for which Professor Ingrid Mann is project project leader and work package leader respectively. Collaboration with project participants, PhD students and Master students, as well as local, national, and international collaborators is expected.

The position will be part of the Space Physics group of the Department which at present includes 5 faculty members, 5 PhD students, 2 Postdoctoral Fellows and 1 Researcher.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position in Tromsø within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

Qualifications

The position requires a Norwegian doctoral degree in physics/engineering or similar, or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. 

Excellent command of English, both written and oral, and interest in Norwegian language and culture is expected. 

The candidate should have expertise related to the tasks mentioned above. Candidates should have a background in physics, space physics, plasma physics, geophysics or a related field. Candidates with a background in Space physics will have an advantage. 
Of particular interest are candidates who have experience in one or more of the following areas: cosmic dust, meteors, ionosphere, space measurements, radar observations, space in situ instruments, advanced image or data analysis, radar studies. 

Emphasis will be given to the applicant's independence, and personal suitability in terms of communication skills.

  • Academic works, up to ten. The doctoral thesis is regarded as one work.

Proficiency in the English language can be documented in the following ways: 

  • Diploma from a Scandinavian upper secondary school with both spoken and written English (140 hours) 
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) 
  • IELTS (International English Testing Service) 
  • Completed university degree in the field of English language or literature 
  • One year of completed university studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or USA, for which English was the language of instructions.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications on the basis of the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailde description draw up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview shall among other things, aim to clarify the applicants personal suitability for the position and motivations. A trial lecture may also be held.
