Job description

Applications are invited for a three-year PhD Research Fellowship in Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics, University of Oslo. The position is set to begin on September 1, 2025.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

The fellowship period is 3 years.

This position is part of the research project “Numerical Analysis of Stochastic TRANsport” (NASTRAN), funded by the Research Council of Norway.  The PhD position will focus on developing mathematical and numerical methodologies for the analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). The research encompasses both deterministic PDEs and equations subject to stochastic perturbations, integrating approaches from machine learning algorithms, transport theory, and optimization.  Examples of relevant equations include, but are not limited to, transport equations, nonlinear wave equations, hyperbolic-parabolic systems.


Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in mathematics or applied mathematics
  • Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (English)
  • A strong theoretical education in mathematics. The appointed fellow should have expertise in at least one of the following research areas: PDEs, numerical methods, optimization, functional analysis, or stochastic analysis

Candidates without a master’s degree have until 1st of August 2025 to complete the final exam.

Personal skills:

  • Good social and collaboration skills, as well as the ability to work independently
  • Self-driven and motivated by the pursuit of fundamental scientific knowledge
  • Very good communication and collaboration skills

Grade requirements:

  • the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system

  • Salary in position as Doctoral Research Fellow, position code 1017 in salary range NOK 536 200 – 575 400, depending on competence and experience. From the salary, 2 percent is deducted in statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund.
