A permanent position is available as Associate Professor in Work and Organizational Psychology at the Faculty of Social Sciences,Department of Psychology. The position is linked to the Section of Methodology, Work and Organizational Psychology, Culture and Community Psychology, and Social Psychology (MAKS) at the Department of Psychology.
The Department of Psychology is Norway’s largest provider of psychology education, offering programs for both licensed clinical psychologists and non-clinical professionals within the field of psychology. The MAKS Section covers basic and applied research (qualitative and quantitative) and teaching for the Bachelor, Master, Professional (Clinical) and PhD programs within its four main units. The MAKS Section has currently 52 national and international permanent and non-permanent staff and includes University Lecturers, Associate Professors and Professors (45% women), as well as Ph.D. & Post-Doc fellows and Adjunct Professors.
More about the position
The Work and Organizational Psychology unit covers a broad range of the field. Current research areas include organizational change, organizational culture/climate, management, motivation, group dynamics, psychological contracts, quality of employment, workplace stress, and human factors. The Nordic model and work-life in the Nordic region form the common basis for the activities in the group.
The successful candidate will be required to initiate and publish research in international peer-reviewed journals, present communications at international conferences, apply for external funding (e.g., RCN, EU), disseminate scientific knowledge, and carry out research in accordance with Open Science standards. Most of these research activities should be within the field of work and organizational psychology. Prior experience with the acquisition of external research funds and the management of research projects is considered an advantage.
The successful candidate is expected to plan and conduct teaching, supervise students and doctoral candidates, and participate in exam related work at all levels of the Department’s study programs (bachelor, master, professional, and PhD) within work and organizational psychology.
Your main tasks will be:
The position will carry a special responsibility for planning and implementing teaching in work and organizational psychology in the professional programme. The teaching content in the professional programme is regulated by the requirements outlined by RETHOS, The National Curriculum Regulations for Norwegian Health and Welfare Education, emphasizing knowledge and training in change management and leadership, as well as group processes, communication, prevention, and universal access. Knowledge and/or experience of the Norwegian health system and its regulations is considered an advantage.
The successful candidate is also expected to participate in the academic administrative functioning of the MAKS Section and the Department of Psychology (boards, committees, ad-hoc working groups, leadership, etc.)
The general teaching language is a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish) or English. As language comprehension is an important element in the training of students in the professional programme, proficiency in one of the Scandinavian languages is regarded an advantage.
In accordance with the university’s appointment regulations, applicants who are qualified for full professorship may subsequently apply for promotion once they have taken up their position.
What Qualifications are important in this role?
Qualification requirements
- PhD or equivalent qualification in psychology or a related discipline. Applicants who have not yet received their PhD must have documented submission of their thesis for evaluation by the time of application. Appointment to the position is contingent upon the approval of the PhD thesis.
- A strong research profile within the area of Work and Organizational Psychology and a track record of publications within the area in acknowledged publication channels.Proficient competence in research methodology/analysis as documented through published work.
- Documented teaching experience within the area of Work and Organizational Psychology at both undergraduate and graduate level.
- Documented pedagogical skills (i.e., a certification in university pedagogics) and an ability to take active part in teaching and administrative work as well as contributing to the further development of teaching in Work and Organizational psychology. Applicants that cannot document basic pedagogical competence at the time of employment must acquire this within the first two years subsequent to their appointment. The Department will support this certification (e.g., coverage of the costs of the courses at the University of Oslo, recognition of the hours of these courses in the departmental teaching accounting system).
- Applicants must have good oral and written communication skills in English.
- Applicants who are not fluent in a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish) will have to learn Norwegian within the first three years of employment to effectively participate in the functions required by the position (documented proficiency: CEFR Independent user Level B2 or equivalent). The Department will support learning Norwegian by covering the cost of the courses at the University of Oslo, reducing teaching and administrative duties, and providing a Norwegian coach.
- The successful candidate is expected to take up residence in the greater Oslo region to actively participate and contribute to the working environment at the Department of Psychology.

Evaluation of applicants
The applicants will be evaluated based on their documented academic qualifications as well as qualifications in teaching, management, and administration. Emphasis will be placed on research and publication in recent years as well as the candidate's future research potential. In the assessment of publications, originality, quality, scope, and interdisciplinary engagement will be emphasized. Documented ability to collaborate in research projects will be taken into consideration during the appointment process.
The Department's overall needs will be part of the considerations made in the hiring process.
Personal qualities and motivation for the job will be emphasized.
The applications will be evaluated by two committees:
1. A “Scientific expert committee” responsible for evaluating the written documents and
to provide a provisional ranking of the applicants based on their written academic
qualifications.
2. A “Nominating committee” responsible for evaluating the overall qualifications of the
best qualified applicants (i.e., scientific committee’s report, trial lecture, interview,
and reference-checking, Personal qualities, and suitability) and to provide a final
ranking of the applicants.
Achievements will be weighed against career stage and adjusted for parental and sick leaves,
and professional breaks.

- A 3-page research project in Work and Organizational Psychology describing one of their future research projects relevant for the position (including a presentation of the scientific originality and interest, social implications, methodology, ethical appropriateness, feasibility, risk factors, and a plan for research dissemination and acquisition of external funding). The 3-page limit is strict.
- Applicants must provide a 3-page document describing their different teaching competence and experience in work and Organizational Psychology at different levels (i.e., bachelor, master / professional (clinical), ph.d.): Course coordination, lecture, seminar, exam, supervision, teaching administration, etc. (including some figures such as the number of students and time span). The 3-page limit is strict.
- Copies of educational certificates in English or in one of the Scandinavian languages (academic transcripts only) including of any certifications of University Pedagogy Education.
