About the position
Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a PhD Candidate in the hydraulic engineering research group at the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. During the project Trygg Elv financed by the research council a prototype for identification of critical locations in steep rivers in regard to flash floods was developed. The prototype is implemented in NorKarts GIS application. The project revealed a large potential for innovation in the cross section between hydraulic modelling and use of artificial intelligence. This potential will be investigated in this PhD study. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with NorKart and the goal is to create and validate methods that enable end users to identify critical natural hazard location with a high degree of certainty to better predict and prevent devastating and potentially dangerous events.
Are you motivated to take a step towards a doctorate and open up exciting career opportunities? As a PhD Candidate with us, you will work to achieve your doctorate, and at the same time gain valuable experience that qualifies you for a further career in higher education and research, in and outside academia.
Your immediate leader will be a professor.
About the project
The hypothesis for the PhD study is that artificial intelligence combined with hydrological and hydraulic models can be used to identify locations where natural hazards can become critical to people and infrastructure. The PhD candidate will investigate relations between hydrology, topography and hydraulic behavior of mass flows to identify these locations. The work will include extensive use of and programming in GIS, extensive use of hydraulic modelling and experimental use of artificial intelligence. The PhD candidate will develop and validate methods combining these fields of knowledge and interact with application developers. The work will also include field work to gather validation data.
